15 Daily Literacy Examples

In one of my last posts, I talked about the importance of literacy. So here are 15 everyday tasks that require reading and writing:

  1. Reading a text or email

  1. Checking bank statements

  2. Reading the menu at a café

  3. Following a recipe

  4. Reading subtitles while watching a movie (we've all done it)

  5. Writing notes to study for a test (We should be doing this one)

  6. Reading a bus schedule or train timetable

  7. Writing a CV or résumé

  8. Writing a to-do list

  9. Reading the Terms and Conditions (can't say we all do this one)

  10. Writing an essay for school (we've all been there — I’d say unfortunately, but we're actually practicing the skill of writing we've been blessed with)

  11. Reading a book (I like this one)

  12. Doing classwork

  13. Reading clothing labels for washing instructions

  14. Understanding posters and notices in public

How many of those did you do today? How many do you do in a week?
Now imagine not being able to do any of the above — simply because you haven’t been adequately taught to recognize the letters on a page.

Do you really think you could manage?
