In one of my last posts, I talked about the importance of literacy. So here are 15 everyday tasks that require reading and writing:
- Reading a text or email
Checking bank statements
-
Reading the menu at a café
-
Following a recipe
-
Reading subtitles while watching a movie (we've all done it)
-
Writing notes to study for a test (We should be doing this one)
-
Reading a bus schedule or train timetable
-
Writing a CV or résumé
-
Writing a to-do list
-
Reading the Terms and Conditions (can't say we all do this one)
-
Writing an essay for school (we've all been there — I’d say unfortunately, but we're actually practicing the skill of writing we've been blessed with)
-
Reading a book (I like this one)
-
Doing classwork
-
Reading clothing labels for washing instructions
-
Understanding posters and notices in public
How many of those did you do today? How many do you do in a week?
Now imagine not being able to do any of the above — simply because you haven’t been adequately taught to recognize the letters on a page.
Do you really think you could manage?
